Building a Brick + Mortar Shop

Building a Brick + Mortar Shop

The decision to launch our baby store August Kinn materialized pretty quickly during the back end of our mat leaves. And the concept of a dual online/brick+mortar store was the obvious choice after we fell in love with a retail storefront in our beloved Toronto East Danforth hood. From the full glass facade with quaint double windows, to the quirky staircase in the middle of the store, the location had a unique character that spoke to us. Not to mention, it was originally a baby store in the 1950s. It was meant to be.

As perfect as it was, it also required a major facelift on both the interior and exterior. We had two months to completely transform the space before opening our doors in September, and we did it ourselves with the help of friends and family. Our vision was to create a soothing and sophisticated space. We used a bright, neutral colour palette so the apparel and accessories could really shine.

It was pretty chaotic trying to care for our babies at the same time as renovating and designing the store, but we came out on the other side with a shop we're pretty darn proud of.
